Third Annual Barbecue of the Desert Deer, or Argus Peak Revisited
April 12-13, 1980     Jones/Clark

A few Saturday morning Late comers joined the Friday night contingent of bibulous bonfire watcher's making a total of 30 gastronomes at the Third Annual climb of Argus Peak. There were five three time repeaters and eleven second time participants.

A leisurely hike up the traditional route in Crow Canyon led all participants to the summit of Argus Peak. On top the corks popped to honor Jack Koshear's attaining emblem status. We returned to camp about 3 o'clock where our thirst was assuaged by all manor of beverages. The meat of the desert deer had been put into the pit to barbecue about 7 a.m. and at 4 o'clock dinner was served. There was plenty, with seconds and thirds available for those who wanted more.

During the campfire that night many weighty matters were discussed and a poetry contest was held. Sherry Harsh took the honors with her poem: "The Ballad of the Desert Barbecue"

Now the DPS, we must confess
Likes peaks that lead to an emblem
And those who climb seldom waste their time
On peaks that don't resemble 'em.
But this spring weekend we set a trend
(And we're sorry for those who missed it)
Burro barbecue, and Argus too
Along with four peaks that aren't even listed!
Ron Jones dug a furrow to roast a burro
And our barbecue we did savor
Right down to the bones, which the great chef Jones
Had cooked to the peak of flavor!
Now we all feel that our burro meal
Had a definite touch of class--
Twas the height you see, of luxury--
Everyone got a piece of ass!
Wine and beer came next, and the ice-ax test,
And songs and poetry.
When we recovered from it we knew that summit
Was the height of absurdity!
After that you'd think that the peak called Zinc
Would have been a bit of a let-down,
But Darwin Fall had us so enthralled-
we didn't want to get down!
So that's our tale of the Trona trail
By our "peaked-out" looks you may mark us--
Those who did the climb had a helluva time,
Our own backyard Circus Vargus.
If this annual spree makes history
It won't be because of Argus!
