The Desert Sage
Chairman's Corner Duane McRuer

This year is a critical one for the future of our part-time habitat: the California Desert. The Bureau of Land Management is about to release a draft of planning alternatives as a basis for additional public input. The DPS is, of course, vitally concerned with the net result. We devoted the January meeting to a presentation by Jim Dotson, who is heading the Club's efforts on the forthcoming plan. After a lively discussion the concensus of those present was that the Section should monitor developments closely and play as strong a role as possible in the proceedings as they develop. To this end we suggest that all members request a copy of the Desert Plan Preview (see notice elsewhere in this issue of the Sage) and prepare and submit comments there on. Please send copies of your remarks to me; the Management Committee will set up an informal group to work with Jim and to provide further input for the plan as it develops.

The DPS Banquet this year will be held again in the comfortable and amiable atmosphere of Lumenarias Restaurant. The Program Committee is pulling together plans for an absolutely outstanding evening. Send check ($11 for each ticket) and SASE to Mike Manchester at 6568 Beach view, No. 217, Rancho Palos Verdes, 90274. It's never too early!

    Happy climbing!
