Your Chairman discreetly managed to side-step the only tough trip of the High Sierra trips, the Labor Day trip to Mt. RUSSELL. Poor Toni Gamero really fell heir to a dilly when neither Bonner nor myself could make the trip at the last minute. But with Virgil Sisson the only other Desert Peaker on the trip to help, Toni succeeded in leading most of the group up the unfamiliar North Fork of Lone Pine Creek and thense to the summit, using a rope to cross a couple of exposed passages. Everyone commented on the grand-stand view of such neighboring places of note as Mt. Whitney and Tulainyo Lake.

As though three trips since the last Newsletter aren't enough Section activities to report, we put on the BOOS BROS. PROGRAM on Friday night, September 7 for the Chapter. In spite of the fact that no advance warning was given that the program would consist in part of a pep talk and pictures by your Chairman, a considerable number of persons got wind of this, judging by the slim attendance. Too bad, too, because there were a lot of people who missed out on our attractive hostess of the evening, Margie Henderson, as well as a showing of Willard Dean's slides taken in the wilds of Central Nevada this summer. You went to be on the watch for scheduled trips back into this country which Willard has in mind for next summer.

Speaking of VACATIONS, there are many noteworthy trips enjoyed by our members. In fact, there are too many to try to cover them all. Among the more original trips are those outlaw ones by the Werners, Hendersons and Balsams. The Werners are nearing the end of their long European junket with return due in early October. Cards from The Matterhorn, Jungfrau end Monte Rosa are their proudest ascents. The Hendersons led the UCLA hiking group on a vacation in the Minaret Country. Just to be different the Balsams headed off for northern Arizona to places like Monument Valley, where, they tell me, Rosie saw some real live Indians living in their natural habitat.

Last but not least is a preview of a swell bunch of DPS trips coming up in the NEW SCHEDULE. Inasmuch as these trips are the principal activity of our group, a lot of effort is spent in organizing a full schedule of interesting and varied trips. We know you will all want to join as many trips as possible and interest your friends in them as well.

Ootober 20-21: Coso and Maturango Peaks
Into the forbidden Naval Range. Be sure to contact the leaders or me prior to setting out on the trip because there is a possibility the Admirals will withdraw permission, in which case we shall climb Sentinel Peak in the Panamints instead.
Thanksgiving week-end: Picacho Peak and Castle Dome
It's rumored there's some rock climbing down near Yuma. We'll bring ropes for everyone, but bring your own suction cups.
New Years week-ends Big Maria and Coxcomb Mts.
Bill Henderson will take you exploring NE of Desert Center.
January 19-20, Rodman Mountains
More exploring out beyond Barstow, SE of Daggett.

Yours for an interesting desert climbing season ahead,

Bob Bear, Chairman
