ANNUAL DESERT PEAKS SECTION Dinner Meeting - May 2, 1979 |

For the second time the Section held its banquet at Luminaria's restaurant in one of its comfortable and amiable atmosphere dining areas. Attendance was up to expectations in anticipation of the welcome of the well-known naturalist, Ruth Kirk. Arrangements were made for her travel from Oregon to be our guest speaker and to show fine films of her much loved desert environs. Program brochures were provided by Betty Wallin, and table flower arrangements by Betty McCosker. The meeting was called to order, and dispensing with the business portion, the Program Chairman opened with personalities recognition remarks. Then the Chairman dutifully thanked the outgoing management committee for its accomplished efforts, an enjoyable and safe desert climbing season, and for everyone's contributions in making his reign successful. The Chairman then proceeded to award the prizes so generously donated by the various merchants. Then the Program Chairman awarded the door prize donated along with many other prizes by Westridge Mountaineering. Chairman Ron Jones then introduced new Chairman Duane McRuer who in turn accepted the Royal crown. Following the new Chairman's loose remarks, his loose expectations for the coming season, and loose introduction of his new but loose management committee, the new loose Chairman then let loose of the floor to introduce guest speaker Ruth Kirk who held the attendance spellbound with her eloquent dissertations on desert adaptation of its inhabitants, plant and animal, its timeless beauty and seemingly endless horizons. Indeed, the program was one of the best ever offered by the Section, and well worth the efforts of past Chairman Ron Jones, Program Chairman Mike Manchester, and past Vice Chairman Jon Inskeep - who inadvertently played hero by averting the back-stage near- disaster cliff-hanger suspense of almost no projector. At the end of the entertainment portion of the meeting provided by guest speaker, past Chairman Ron Jones presented an artistically drawn scroll which was awarded to Ruth Kirk in special recognition of her work. |
