The Desert Sage
CHAIRMAN'S CORNER Ron Jones

"It is a thirsty, bare and mostly empty country. It is tan not green. It has no abounding grace of fertility and little softness to evoke ease in man's spirit. Its richness is space, wide and deep and infinitely colored, visible to the jagged mountain rim of the world-- huge and challenging space to evoke huge and challenging freedom. A wonderful country. Amen!"

Tom Lea

This is the first column from a DPS Chairman living in Trona, next-door to Death Valley. 105 degrees or more in the shade every day but I like it for the reasons Tom Lea gives above. All us DPS Nuts like it for one reason or another.

I want to thank the out going Chairman, "Sheik" Manchester for a great season past, four new peaks on the list and an entertaining banquet. I want to thank Ron Fracisco for a great program on the trip he led to some of the Baja cave paintings. And last I want to thank the remainder of the outgoing Management Committee for making last season such a Success.

Management Committee for the 1978-79 season is: Ron Jones, Chairman; Jon Inskeep, Vice Chairman and Schedule Chairman; Chuck Pospishil, Secretary-Trasurer; Mike Manchester, Program Chairman; Duane McRuer, Council Rep; Betty Wallin, Conservation Chairman; and a great vote of appreciation to Barbara Reber, repeating SAGE editor since January 1974!
We are going to have a great season of desert climbs starting this Fall. Jon Inskeep is trying to plan a trip each weekend. Think about any trips you want to lead or can help on and contact Jon. Schedule deadline is in mid-July.

We will continue to meet this year at the Bellevue Ave. Youth Services Center. See you all the first Wednesday in October.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL
