The roadhead we used for Avawatz was the Old Mormon Springs Rd 22.3 miles North of Baker on Hwy. 127. With a little road reassembling, we got up about 3 miles. From here, 29 of us headed for the wash just north of the springs. About 2-1/2 miles up from the mouth of the canyon the main canyon branches right when it looks like it goes straight ahead. About 3/4 mile above this is another branch at the site of an old cabin. Here, the right (N) branch is taken, staying in the main watercourse nearly to the end where two left choices lead to a ridge from which the peak is seen up a ridge to the NW. All but two of us had lunch on top and we were all back to the cars by dark.
Many of the participants elected to leave the club trip at this point to go bathing and head off to seek personal glory on "List" peaks Sunday. The faithful were rewarded with an 8 tire fire with a really professional concert by Victor Jahn from Fontana.He played the sweetest folk songs you ever heard on his cigar box full of harmonicas. In the quiet desert night it ran warm tingles up our spines.
Sunday, 14 real climbers met at the pass just north of Kingston Pk N. and ascended right up the ridge all the way. We broke into two groups so the eager ones would not be held back and the more mellow souls would not be hurried. Everyone made the peak and unanimously agreed that it was a more magnificent climb, a more worthy peak than a number that were mentioned (but which I will not repeat out of respect) that are already enshrined on the Sacred List.
