The Desert Sage
CHAIRMAN'S CORNER
DPS now holds its monthly meetings in the Orange Boom of the Department of Water and Power, 111 N. Hope Street, Los Angeles.

We didn't plan it that way. Two weeks before the October 6 meeting Phil Bruce, Program Chairman, received notice that the room at Youth Services Center would not be available for the DPS October and December meetings. We had to get a meeting place on short notice. We learned that the Orange Room was available and we took it. Since the schedule was about to be printed, we decided to meet at the Orange Room through next February.

Now we would like to know what DPS members would prefer as a permanent meeting place. I assume that you are familiar with the Youth Services Center, but for those who did not attend the October 6 meeting I would like to point out the advantages and disadvantages of the Orange Room. First the advantages:
  1. It is centrally located.
  2. It is about the right size for DPS meetings.
  3. It is free.
  4. There is guarded free parking.
  5. There is a convenient place for serving refreshments and room to stand or sit at tables while having refreshments.
The principal argument against the Orange Room is that we could be placed in an embarrassing position if a conflict should develop between the Sierra Club and DWP. Suppose, for example, that the Sierra Club should oppose DWP's taking more water from the Owens Valley. Would it be right then for DPS to meet at DWP?

We seek your views about the best meeting place. Do you prefer the Youth Services Center? It so, what alternatives are there if we should again be evicted from the Youth Services Center on short notice? Do you prefer the Orange Room? Or some other location? Please communicate your views to Phil Bruce, Program Chairman. If you feel an urge to speak out about the meeting place come to the next DPS meeting and you will have an opportunity to present your views.
