Eleven people met at Sheephole Mine Road on Saturday,
November 16, 1974. After signing in, we climbed the peak via the obvious canyon
leading Southeast and then eastward over broken up country to the summit. After
descending, we drove to the desert East of Danby where we made camp and had a
pleasant campfire. The next morning, we drove up the road to Florence Mine, one
car was left by the wayside because it could not negotiate the sand. The road
lies in a dry wash and could always be a problem to some car/tire combinations,
We walked past the Florence Mine site and up the broad canyon heading South to
the small saddle at 4090 ft. From here we traversed the NE side of point 4882'
to the saddle between it and the summit. After lunch we returned by the same
route including some more pushing of the car in the sand. The weather was fine.
The views were excellent, and the weekend was most enjoyable. |

NOV. 23-24 DFG WORK PARTY
We (Betty Dessert, Paul Lipsohn, Elliott Snyder and I) met Mike and Les
(DFG Habitat rangers) and their young friend, Jeff, at the Pioneer Pt. Motel @
7:00 am on Saturday. We drove to the Great Falls Basin roadhead, picked up our
equipment (shovels, picks, brush cutters, enthusiasm, etc.) and hiked in about
2 miles and 1200' gain. Peakbagging would never have taken us into this
delightful area. Argus was silhouetted on the skyline to the west. We passed
several springs that had been previously boxed in and finally located our
project for the day. The redwood and 3 bags of cement were waiting for us
(helicoptered in). When we started digging, the spring looked like a seep,
after a few hours we had a good flowing spring. Into the pool went the box and
some rocks (local items rolled downhill from above). After lunch, we polished
it off. A nice spring, a protected pool of water and a front porch for the
locals to quench their thirst. Mike and Les were very knowledgeable, dedicated
and pleasant company. We enjoyed the day and now look forward to checking out
this spring next fall. Mike, Les and Jeff couldn't stay over on Sunday so we
had dinner at the Pioneer Mt. Motel Cafe (very good). Then we drove over to Red
Mtn. On Sunday, we climbed Red, Kinker and Dome reducing Paul's goal by 3. Work
projects such as this are very useful, needed and satisfying. I hope the DPS
keeps this going and gives it the support it needs.
