| EDITOR'S CORNER | BARBARA REBER | |
Our annual banquet was a huge success. Our emcee (The Red Baron) was in rare form. Unfortunately I did not collect any Red Baronisms, It seems we should collect Vitzisms, Stocktonisms and DPSisms. We are blessed with a group that have clever tongues and clever pens. There were a few prizes, I'm not sure what they were. One questionable prize came from Monogram Industries. Ask Stag Brown what he won. Fred Bode won the Grand Prize, an honest to goodness Cactus. Womans Lib did not make a clean sweep of all the sections as George Hubbard is our new Chairman. Other officers are John Backus, Vice-Chairman; Barbara Reber, Sec-Treas.; Barbara Magnuson, Program Chairman; Al Campbell, Council Rep. We also added 3 peaks, Indianhead, Rosa Point, and Stepladder Mtn. to our peaks list. Navajo Mtn. still remains as a listed peak. I hope this is the last time we threaten to take this mighty mountain off the list. |

| TRANSPENINSULA HIGHWAY -BAJA, CALIFORNIA | WALT WHEELOCK | |
I noticed in the latest issue of the DPS Newsletter, tearful comments on the new highway. As a good Desert Peaker, feel assured that this has about as much to do with isolated Baja as the LA-Las Vegas racetrack has with our desert. The Americans are parading straight down the highway to Cabo San Lucas, then returning, hardly looking to the right or left. We just made a trip after the first of the year, as the 6000 car Holiday Mob were returning. We found a hell of a crowd at the first beach spot at Bahia Concepcion, with giant campers and mobi1e homes with generators putt-putting away, to run their air conditioning and TV's. Ditto at Puerto Escondido. Most other delightful camp-spots were empty. It seems that the new gang have to have the outsized rigs and stay all together. We saw only these and of the VW vans; little of |
