PROPOSED DELETION: NAVAJO MTN.

Now that we have to come to terms with a gasoline shortage which threatens to make desert peaking more difficult and more costly, it would seem reasonable to re-evaluate some of the far-away peaks on the DPS list. Navajo Mtn. is one of the two most distant peaks- 655 miles from Los Angeles. From the descriptions of those who have climbed it, I would judge it to be not worth a 1300 mile round trip to climb. A road goes to the summit, not passable to ordinary cars, but presumably negotiable by 4- wheel drive and motorcycles. From the roadhead accessible by cars, ( after 40 miles of dirt road), it is 11 miles round trip with 4000 feet gain, but there is a repeater station on the summit and no view. I therefore recommend its deletion from the DPS list.

PROPOSED RETENTION: NAVAJO MTN.

Navajo Mtn. is a worthy DPS peak. Its great expanse and over 10,000' height makes it dominant in the area. Although the ascent is not technically difficult, it is pleasant and offers exceptional views of the Monument Valley area. Not a mountain for a week-end jaunt from Los Angles, it is a peak to climb while visiting a spectacular area of arches, canyons and desert wonders. It is worthy to remain on the DPS list.
