SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER NO 119

CHAIRMAN'S CORNER
The by-laws amendment to add Charleston Peak to the list of emblem peaks and reword the emblem requirements to five of seven emblem peaks was considered at the October meeting. Following a brief and subdued discussion period, the amendment was routinely adopted. A second amendment introduced from the floor to increase the emblem requirements to six of the seven peaks was resoundingly defeated, 16 to 14.

The D.P.S. conservation effort (largely a two or three man program for many years) has a new opportunity this year. The Department of Fish and Game has an exciting program to study, maintain and improve desert springs in an effort to expand the wildlife population in our desert ranges. Needed are people to hike, pack in wood and cement to remote sites and dig out existing springs, etc. We hope to have representatives from the D.F.G. at the December meeting to outline their program and tell us how we can best assist them. Do we have enough people interested to muster a work party on a monthly basis? I certainly hope so. The program will be under the direction of our Conservation Chairman, Ed Treacy.

The Mountaineering Committee for this year consists of: Howard Stephens, Chairman; Bill Banks and John Backus.

PEAK BAGGER OF THE MONTH
On the scheduled climb of South Guardian Angel in October, Fred Bode joined the select group of internationally famous climbers who have climbed all the peaks on the DPS list. Fred may have started climbing desert peaks a little later than most of us, but he makes up in dedication and perseverance for any alleged lack of youth. We congratulate Fred and expect to hear more about his accomplishment in the trip report in the next Newsletter.

A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR
Due to unanticipated increases in the demands for my time, it is becoming increasingly difficult for me to act as editor of the News letter. If anyone is willing to assume the editorship, please let me know. It takes about 5 hours an issue in addition to the typing, which is relatively little time to offer on an every other month basis.
