CHAIRMAN'S CORNER -- Paul Lipsohn

The old adage of one man's poison being another's meat has been vividly demonstrated this winter with the plentiful and late snows delaying the onset of the Sierra season, while prolonging the desert season and providing us with one of the finest wildflower displays in many years. From Baja to Bishop the hills and washes were ablaze with seldom seen varieties, giving the climbing photographers among us a field day.

Although the rising temperatures have slowed us down for a few months, we haven't shut down completely - with several trips to our higher Nevada peaks going in July.

Elsewhere in this issue are the complete results of this year's election and peaks list revisions. We have added some fine new peaks in several new areas to enjoy.

The impending gasoline shortage may prove beneficial to our interests. As the price increases the 8-mile/gallon arks pulling dune-buggies and trailer loads of motorcycles should decrease inversely. The solitude will be well worth the added cost……

Election Results

The new management committee consists of Paul Lipsohn (Chairman), Howard Stephens (Vice-Chairman), Jerry Haven (Secretary), Al Campbell and George Hubbard (Program Chairman and Liaison or vice versa as no one bothered to tell me).

Palmer, Black Butte, and East Ord were added to the list; Tres Palomas failed; Coso and Marble were deleted; Charleston was elevated to emblem status; all others failed even though Baboquivari got a majority.

The first three bylaw amendments passed, thereby making everything done in recent years legal. The change in emblem peak status failed as did the upping of the number of peaks needed for emblem status. So we are in no danger of losing our status as the candy peak climbing section.

Other Garbage

I am "dropping out" next month and will be unavailable for editing. Henceforth the editor will be:

Jerry Haven, 320 Twelfth St. #12, Seal Beach, CA 90740.

Doris Golden reports that Vance's Hilico Service on Highway 178 in the Trona area can be opened after hours for those of you with near empty gas tanks.

A new peaks list accompanies this issue.
