HAVASU CANYON | Ed Treacy | |||||
Thirteen survived a slippery, sometimes boggy, 60-mile ride from U.S. 66 to Hualapai Hilltop to enjoy a splendid three days in Havasu Canyon - beautiful weather, not many people, and only two skunks. Spent Saturday hiking leisurely to the campground below the village. Sunday was the day for fun and frolicking with each doing his or her own thing. A couple of people explored the area around the village, the rest started down the canyon as a group, but became unglued at the first river crossing. Some wanted to keep the shoes dry, others were uninhibited, with the result that five river baggers, undeterred by a Park Service sign saying it was six hours to the river, took off while the rest were content with the pleasant hike down to Beaver Falls. All were back in camp before dark - the trip to the river being more like four hours. Both evenings our camp was enlivened by two small spotted skunks - cute, bold, and presumably undescented. They were busy all night both nights checking out packs, pots and everything else they could lay their paws on. Gentle Persuasion and that's all we were about to try - didn't impress them, so most of us were up every now and again pleading with them to scoot. Another wilderness experience. No fires are allowed in the Park campground. The Indians are developing a primitive campground just below the village at which fires are permitted; there is wood in the area. |
