It has not been all roses, however.

There have been some brickbats, too. Some members have been perturbed over the conservation write-ups every month in the Newsletter. I'll admit that we have had more conservation awareness in the present DPS Newsletter than we have ever had before. This, however, is not a valid excuse for members to criticize either John Vitz or me. Personally I have heard the same static before. When, as co-chairman of another conservation group a few years back, we cautioned group and club members about apathy in conservation, we were called alarmists and radicals. However, those things that we warned against have now come to pass and we no longer have the freedoms which we once enjoyed in our outdoors. I'm sure, too, that John Vitz is not going to lose any sleep because some members have criticized the quality of the Newsletter. The membership should be thankful that someone is willing to give of his time and effort to do this. It is quite a job and we know for we have been that route too. To compare our present Newsletter with one that was edited a few years ago is not being fair to John.

In the words seen quite often in the saloons of the early west, I say, "PLEASE DO NOT SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER. HE IS DOING THE BEST HE CAN".

Our section would be further ahead, stronger in our purpose, if we all were to follow the example of a DPS member and emblem holder, Bob Bear, who through his efforts and generosity has made it possible to preserve a desert area in which all of us can enjoy an outdoor experience in its natural state.

We wish to thank the following members who contributed financial help toward the preservation of the pupfish: Bill Banks, Dennis Lantz, the Petitjeans, Paul Nelsons, and the Todd Taylors. Their donations to this worthy cause were appreciated.

We also wish to thank the members who have given their time to lead trips for the So. Calif. Regional Conservation Committee enabling us to learn the importance of preservation of these areas. To date those who have led trips are: Bob Greenawalt, Bob Bear, and Bud and Bep Bingham.
