CLIPPER RANGE, SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

In January of this year I climbed Clipper Mountain in the Mojave Desert north of US Highway 66. Take the paved road going northwest from Essex toward Kelso. At 8.3 miles (from Essex) turn east end after less than one mile south to Goldhammer Mine. Proceed beyond the mine on a poor road a short distance toward Chuckawalla Spring (See Colton Well 15' topo map). From the mines above Chuckwa11a Spring bike on a direct bearing southwest to Clipper Mountain. The views are superb and wide-ranging. The elevation gain is about 2200 feet of class one, and the round trip is about five miles. This is a rather easy, pleasant hike suitable for a Saturday warm-up.
